i've been trying to make a family for a gate from a door family but it doesn't work very well that way. should it be made from scratch and how would i do that?

You are right by starting with a door family and yes, you may have to start from scratch.
You will have to model the tubular pipe frames associated with most gate type doors. Then create the fence by using Solid Form>Extrusion for the mesh and assign a crosshatch pattern to its surface.
