How do I createa a template?

I am trying to do some changes to a revit default template and the try to save those changes to my templete. The problem is that I can sae only the first time the next same revit save that it is right protected or so.
Am I doing it the wrong way?

When saving your modified template, just add the ".rft" extension to your new filename. It will save as that type.

When you do a save, do a save as and select .rte or when you start, do file >new >template instead of project
