View Full Version : AutoCAD 2008 Bogging Down

I do not know if anyone has experienced this but as of late, my CAD has been bogging down when I try to insert something or do a control-copy of a detail or notes. It seems to take along time to think. It has only started doing this of late.

We are consulting engineers who work only in 2D and I have a dual core processor with 2gb of RAM. AS I mentioned, it was not doing this before but now it is.

Has anyone come across this as well?

I have the same issue. Cad locks up when I try to copy something
from one drawing to another. It is very annoying and makes me
want to go back to 2007.

Just a suggestion:

My was slow until I cleared how my internet cookies and internet temp files, now 2008 back up to speed.

It seems like people have a lot of problems with slowdown when Communications Center is active. You can try clicking on the satellite dish on the upper right hand corner of your screen and in the drop down that appears click on the settings button at the bottom. On the "General" tab under "Check for new online content:" I have it set to "Never". I have 2008 and I copy a lot between drawings without any significant slowdown.

You might also try typing %temp% in the explorer address bar and deleting the files in that temporary folder, as well as defragmenting your computer. I think some virus protection software has a lot to do with system slowdown, too. I wonder if there is some setting to scan information sent to the clipboard for viruses.

You also want to clear out the temporary files within your user profile.

I agree. I thought I would try using the RSS feeds in 2008, but communication center
dropped all the links I had saved. Will they ever get it to work right?

I have tried your suggestions but they did not change my problems. I have found that when I copy from a dwg that I have opened with 2005 and paste into 2008, there is no issue.

As for notes, if I create a wblock using 2005, inserting them with 2008 is no issue. It is only when I am copying or inserting from 2008 to 2008. I am not sure if it may be something to do with annotation scaling or something like this.

Another update...

I have just installed Service Pack 1 and still not fixed. I am communicating with my reseller to see if they no of anything.

Do you have any support files on the network?
When I first installed ACA, it was very slow. I had the bright idea to load all of my materials, templates, etc on my network. That way, when I update in the future, but open a drawing done in a previous version, I didn't have to remap everything (since the directory, for example, would no longer say ACAD2007, but now would be ACAD2008 or something like that).
Anyway, it didn't work. Apparently my network isn't as fast as I thought. So I reinstalled everything locally, and now it's faster than 07 was. Just a thought.

We have an IT guy that insists on telling us to move drawings to our PC to make changes, then save them back to the server, instead of fixing the slow server. We work with a lot of images that are xref'd in.

Does your IT guy know that AutoCAD does that by default?

When you open up a drawing, the main dwg and any xref dwgs are copied to your temp file directories, and all access except saving happens there.

Unless your settings in Options>Files define your temporary file location as on the network...

He's an idiot. Same guy that is trying to have us using carpstation.

the basic requirement for Autocad 2008 is 3GB ram. it is much more advance than 2007.increase ur ram

The slowdown you are experiencing is not a generic 2008 problem. I can copy & paste a full sheet of notes or details from one dwg to another and the longest delay is about 2 seconds.

Meanwhile my system is similar - 3.2GHz P4D, XP SP2, 2G RAM at work; the home box is much nicer.

I clean out my temp directories every few weeks, keep a large (4G at work, 8G at home) permanent virtual memory file, and I never let my system drive get below 30G of available storage. Communication center is set not to look for new content, and no RSS feeds. Finally, I have no more than about 15 CTB/STB files in my plot styles directory.

How fast is your network? All our CAD systems and servers are on gigabit ethernet lines & switches (same at home).

That is way off. I have 1GB ram with no delays whatsoever. Autodesk specifies 512MB ram:

I think he's referring to ACA 2008. I seem to remember needing 3 gig for my machine. Which, of course, you can't get on a Dell since it runs in pairs. I'm running 4G even though XP only recognizes 3 of it. :? I think that the 3 gig minimum has something to do with it being made to run on Vista. 2G aught to be enough on XP.

First, it was because he didn't want everyone loading up their drives with music and videos and carp, then, after we all started using Ipods, it was because a smaller drive is faster and increases performance.. I only have about 27G free space and it seems to work fine.

WHAT? Shoot him.
A month ago I paid only £33 for a 250 Gbyte drive.

Worth a shot, but try to reset all your scales by using the scalelistedit command or the
-scalelistedit command.

Spot on Adrian. I was actually trying this but without the '-' sign and was having issues. My CAD reseller told me about using the '-' in the command. You also need to have service pack 1 for it to stop making this issue occur. Installing service pack 1 also keeps AutoCAD from adding to the scale list.

I am a happy lad again.
