View Full Version : Roof Problem
Hi everyone. I have a fairly difficult roof problem and I wonder if anyone can give me a helping hand. I have attached a screen shot of the roof, file with just the roof and also and picture what we are trying to achieve. How best would you approach this roof?

Is is supposed to be a hip roof on the sides? In the picture it looks to be a gable.
It would be nice if there were some walls to go off of for the roof itself so one can tell where your trying to base the roof from.

The first thing I noticed from your file is that your seperate roofs are not at the same heights. The 2nd thing is that it looks like the piece of roof that covers the porch is a different pitch than the rest of the house, but not sure, it just looks that one in the pic. Also after looking at your file it looks like you're trying to draw most of the roof in one sketch. I'd suggest drawing each piece of roof seperatly. By that I mean each gable end I'd draw seperatly.
All the roof heights are correct and the pitch is the same all over. There are a number of gables that need to be added so it is a really difficult one to achieve.

Actually the extra gables that are coming off of the main roof are not at the same height. They are off a little bit. Once they are at the same level things would look better.

This should give you an idea of how to do it.....but imo a higher pitch would look better....
Your gables that were coming off the main roof were 124mm too high.

Elmo,
Review this old thread and see if you can use any of the ideas HERE. (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=9568&highlight=roofs)

here is what I came up with. I would also change the pitch to a steeper one like Michael suggests to get it to match the picture you posted. I've used a Roof Opening which you'll need to use when you start getting into more complex roofs. Hope this works for you.
Fascinating thread this...
If the house picture is the intended result, am I wrong in thinking that it looks as though the roof slope is less in order to extend it over the verandah, and the two gables mask the change in pitch?
Thus it could be done in just two roofs?
FWIW I always make extended corners even if the valleys come down to a point and then trim them back to a couple of mm (or 1/8")
Apologies - I stupidly did this in a demo version on my backup machine and so cannot post the model , but I'll recreate it on a licenced machine if you think it's of any interest.
Interesting this ;)
and so gave it another go, as attached.
BTW I've purged the project and zipped it but I can't seem to get the file any smaller - is there a knack to this - or is it because there are walls in the file?
Thanks for all the responses guys! I will hopefully be able to make this right. Thanks for all the help guys.
