I am trying to figure why the columns from my linked structural model won't show up in a detail plan views unless we set the detail level to coarse. In addition if the callout view is created as a Floor plan view everything is fine, but if it is created as a Detail view then do not show up as outlined above.

I have created a detail view titled Detail 1. At grid intersection 2C and 2D there is a W14x257 that when the detail level ifs set to Coarse everything shows up just fine, but in view Copy of Detail 1 if I switch to Medium or Fine they seem to disappear. The weird thing is that the tube steel sections along grid line one stay visible no regardless of the changing of views.

You probably have to set an override of structural elements in either your main model, or overrides in the linked model to make columns, beams, etc. always display as medium level. This wall cause them to appear correctly. Typically the structural models have the geometry set to course.

The weird thing is if open up the structural model and I make the same type of view things seem to show up just fine. It is some strange difference between the detail and plan type of callouts. In every other type of view the steel member is acting correctly. Is there any type of variable in the view that may be causing this reaction when I change the detail level?

I found that the answer to this is a known issue that is being worked on by Autodesk. The workaround I was given for when this happens to open the family and go to the Settings pulldown and select "Family Categories and Parameters". In this dialogue box you should Uncheck the Show family pre-cut in plan view and reload the family into the project.
