Hey everyone,

I thought it would be a good idea, awhile back, to start a thread concerning the class that i will be teaching at the upcoming Autodesk University 2007. I know its a little late in the game but I figured it would give people a chance to ask questions as well as allow me to give a bit more information about the class, for all those that were interested.

Here are some renders from the scene that i will be using for my class...which i will be giving away, in its entirety to all those that attend. I will be posting more information tonight. A basic overview of what i'll be going over, how i'm going to do it and some other general info.

Please feel free to post any questions/concerns and i will do my best to deal with them. Thanks!

Uh, wow.

There isn't one flaw in that scene.

I've never wanted to go to AU so badly.

Duuuuude.....

You've even got depth of field blur going in the last photo.

I exported my schedule from au online and imported into outlook yesterday and was thinking, hey I can probably cut out early on Friday to beat everyone leaving at the same time. I just realized that's your class and there ain't no way in H E double hockey stick that I'm cutting early from that class! That's going to be a sweet one. Since its not a lab, can I have the files in advance so I can poke holes in them during class on my laptop? :-)

Hey Steve, bring your mp3 player and record the class, take pictures with your camera phone, then send me the lecture and slides... ;)

It will all be available after the class....including myself! I'm planning on offering support, within reason, to all those who attend...through MSN as it relates to the class content. The hand out has some good info, which will be available before AU i think. I intentionally left out alot of stuff in the handout....simply because there are some key concepts that are better shown then read. Most of this will be in the powerpoint. So with the handout, the powerpoint, the scene and me available for questions after the lecture through MSN i should be able to help people elevate their renders.

Sa-weeeet! I won't miss it!!!

Dwayne, will your powerpoint and handouts be available to subscription customers?

Btw, did you use mr or vray for this example rendering? I've yet to get vray since I've got mr, but I'm not really sure of the real advantage of vray. From what I understand, it's a bit faster, but is it that much faster? As far as quality goes, it seems to make more of a difference on how the artist creates it than the rendering engine that produces it...

You should be able to get at everything as far as i understand it....once they post everything to the site. Joseph might be a better one to jump in here. For this rendering and most of my rendering for that matter, i use VRay. I've said it before..they have made a lot of progress as far as the usability of MR in MAX. It used to be so cryptic but it is quite usable now. There is a rendering in AUGIWorld mag that i used MR for...i think it was jumping to MAX 9 or something like that. That was the first iteration of the new gui and workflow.
Some would disagree with me but i would say that VRay is faster...especially as your scenes get bigger. I also think that it is alot more straight forward in understanding how to control it and what you can expect from it. Some of the stuff that i'll be talking about in my class will definetely transfer over to the MR side of things...the concepts i mean....actually to most rendering engines out there.

It is true about the artist making the image but having the right tools helps. Ultimately it comes down to what you like and what you can use effectively and efficiently in your pipeline. I'll be using MR more this year....just for my own interest.

I had such a hard time with this course....i'm struggling on what i know is important for those taking my class to understand and what will help them, more then just a step by step of how i completed this scene. I think its mandatory... its better to understand how the renderer works and how things effect it then the step by step, tutorial like instruction. I will be doing a bit of both.

Its kind of the give a man a fish...blah blah....give him a fishing rod....blah blah! It will be useful...just hope everyones awake enough to absorb it!!
