Is there a way to use a model styled roof material on the main roof and use a metal roof on accent areas?

Use the split face tool and 'paint' the roof sections in question with an alternate material

I have a lower roof w/ a different material. I change the default roof to the material or hatch pattern I want. Can you have different roof default?

Do you mean when you first start a project, you want xyz roof construction with finish to be the roof you always start with?

No, I have a townhouse building w/ shakes which I use the default roof. I need to add a lower roof over a bay w/ a metal roof. I never have done this before. What is the best way? Thanks

Why don't you just create another roof type and apply the different material you need there. Roofs just like walls can be duplicated and have their structure and material assignments modified.

It sounds like you are only trying to work by having only a "default roof" material when in fact you may need to create multiple roof material assignments like : standing seam metal - blue, standing seam metal - green, GAF 3tab charcol etc. and assign these materials to a roof by editing the roof structure within your different types of roofs.

Just make it with your default roof, then pick it, click properties, edit/duplicate, make a new roof type. change the structure and materials as needed.

thanks. I did create a slope glazing roof that I add grids to create a metal roof. However, I can't find the mullion family in my library. I have it in another project, but I can't seem to locate it.

Mullions are system families. If you purged unused stuff, you probably got rid of them. Use Transfer Project Standards to get back from a Revit Template.

thanks, it's driving me crazing.

Which family is it?

Use Transfer Project Standards to get back from a Revit Template. Uncheck everything and then pick "Curtain Wall Mullions"...(from memory here)

Sorry for bugging you, but there is no Curtain Wall Mullions.

Just open a new project, draw a curtain wall, place some mullions, then copy paste that into your project.

Then you can pick on a mulllion and make a duplicate and change its sizes.
