View Full Version : Discipline problem
To be able to show the curtain walls I have set the discipline to coordination. But if I have a slab with a beam the hidden lines doesn't show up when I is set to coordination.
Are there any way to control how objects are displayed in the different disciplines?

If you want any walls to show up on your structural plans that are typically "Architectural" walls such as glazing or partition walls or something you have to set them to be bearing. Personally I think this is lame, walls set to be Non-bearing should show up as half toned or thin-lined or really however you want to match your office standards.
Hi,
My Curtain Wall is set to bearing. This makes it very hard to show both the panels in the Curtain Wall and any beams in the slab.
If my discipline is set to Structural then the beam in the slab are displayed (as dashed lines) but not the curtain wall. If the discipline is set to Coordination the I can see the Curtain Wall but not the beam in the slab.
How do you overcome this?
Thanks

Have you tried keeping the Discipline set to "structural" but turning the curtain walls on through the Visibility Graphics?
Thanks for replying.
If I have the discipline set to Structural the Curtain Panels are not showing up even though they are turned on the Visibility Graphics

Keep your view discipline at 'Coordination' and use the "show hidden lines" feature. Click on Tools > Show Hidden Lines then select your slab followed by whatever you want to be visible underneath it.

I have done that. If I change the discipline to Structural it slab looks fine i.e. I can see the hidden line but the hidden line disappear when I change the discipline to Coordination.

Are you talking about trying the 'show hidden lines' feature under the Tools menu and not just the model graphics display "hidden lines?" I quickly put a beam under a slab, set the model graphics to hidden line, view discipline to coordination, and the beam displays as you are describing, shown in the first pic attached. Next, I selected Tools > Show Hidden Lines as seen in the second pic. Then I selected the element to show lines through (a.k.a. the slab), followed by the element I want to see hidden (a.k.a. the beam). The result is the final pic. This process has to be done for every surface that is above the desired beam. If this still doesn't work, then I am at a loss.

I didn't notice your attached project...instead of posting pics of my own, I should have just edited yours and resent it in the first place. Anyway, I have now done just that and it works perfectly. See the attached file and notice the hidden lines with the view discipline still set at 'coordination.' If you want to remove the hidden lines use Tools > Remove Hidden Lines.

Thanks Jon,
Sorry for my ignorance. Yes when I did use the Tools/Show hidden lines it works.
It is a pain though that you have to set the discipline to Arch. to be able to use the Show hidden Line tool.
Thanks again and Merry X-mas

Actually it can be either Arch or Coordination to use the Show Hidden Line tool. It isn't available in Structural because hidden lines are automatic in that discipline.

OK. I still don't understand the Discipline setting or the discipline filter or whatever this view parameter is.
1) Why does this parameter even exist in the view parameters box? Is it a system parameter? If so, why does it have no controls under settings?
2) Why would anyone use it? It seems to be so problematic. I'll set up filters that I can control and set all views to coordination and then I can manage what I see and how I see it.
3) When working on a small project (S and A are both in same model) why does the architectural discipline seem to take precedence even when accessing the model from Revit Structural? For instance: a view is created by struc, it is set to struc discipline, then a section is cut in that view. The new section view automatically sets itself to arch discipline and the annotation is now not viewable in the struc view and referencing the wrong view. One must jump through a bunch of hoops to set the section view properly after the fact.
