Can anyone tell me the relationship between the Material settings in "Object Styles" and the material settings in an object structure? for example, if the object style fmaterial for "ceiling" is set to gyp bd. and the ceiling structure has a finish of "acoustic tiles" which one will display? if there is no finish defined in the structure, does it use the object style material?

The materials in the "Object Styles" dialog set the default material for a category. The objects themselves can use this default material (By Category) or can be set to use a material other than the categories default (see attached image).

I think the answer to your question is yes.

If no material is defined anywhere else, it'll default to the object style material, if selected.

If you set the object material in the family to a type, the object style setting apparently has no affect on the object, whether defined by object style or not. Note the three boxes. Box1 has a type definition, box2 and box3 have instance definitions, Boxes 2 and 3 can be controlled by the object style list. Box1 cannot. Box2 is material by category, box3 has a defined material by instance, and is overriden by the object style setting.
