Could anyone tell me if there is a way to sub-catergorize the compnents into different categories? For example, have a Cabinents, Electrical, Appliances, etc..menu's, so that all of the compnents are not in a sigle drop down list?

Unfortunately no. Other than things like doors and windows most other components are classified as 'other' as far as the type selector goes.
You can get almost where you want to go by enforcing naming conventions for families. Remember that the type selector will sort alphanumerically and set up your naming conventions accordingly. Keep in mind that the width of the type selector pull down is also fixed so don't make your grouping prefixes too long.
