When Revit give you the error about duplicate name it will alos give the element ID you can select the grid element by the ID number and press the delete key. This will get rid of the grid you can't see and let you place a or rename the grid to the name you would like.

Or will allow you to track it :-)

I performed a search on this subject looking for "column grids that think they exist".

I have a project that won't allow me to renumber an existing column grid because Revit says that it exists. I can not find any such grid number. Crazy me, but I am very sure it does not exist - but hey, I'm more than willing to be proven wrong.

When the error message pops up, I do not get an identifier. And if I did, how would I select an object knowing its identity number?

Okay, I found the offending object and deleted it and renumbered correctly.
And, I found the means to select an object by its i.d. number.
Tools
Element Ids
Select by Id

But, I still never had an i.d. show when Revit told me there was a problem. Am I missing something?

You have to go into the details of the error message and then expand the tree. In the expanded tree you will see an element ID number you can use to select the item.
