View Full Version : Section and Detail Coordination

There have been similar threads, but with some of the new functionality, I'd like to revisit the issue coordinating 2D work in sections and blow up details. In the past we've done copy/past from one to the other, but things inevitably get missed. One option is to show none of the detail in the section and leave it all to the blow up. I don't like the idea and now that the group tool is more robust in 2008, I'm thinking of again attempting to group all 2D objects in a section and use that group in all blow ups of the section so that in true BIM form, one will change all.

Seems to work fine on the one section with 3 blow ups I've tried. Two questions before I take this too far:
1. Anyone tried this for a whole project?
2. My understanding was that groups slow the project. Is that true still? By how much if I give this a go project wide.
3. Is there a way to create a dependent detail view of a section that I'm missing? That's really what I want and the grouping is just a means to that end.

Thanks in advance

Kevin

I've done this and I think it works fine, however, I wait until well into the CD phase to start doing this. We take the same approach that we did in the old Autocad days...wait until as late as possible before getting into heavy detailing, so as to try and minimize having to go back and change things.

And yes, the more groups, the more things will slow down.

I usually just show a few things in my overall building sections, like slab edges or other foundation conditions, gravel fill under the slab, a filled region for earth, and maybe insulation batting lines. It's basically just enough to make the overall section look correct. Other than that I leave most of the detailing to the larger wall sections and details.
