Recessed Wall Based Families

How do i make a recessed wall hosted family cut a void into the wall. if i use wall opening and lock it to the family's boundaries the opening goes through the overall wall thickness. i tried enclosing the family by a void but that didn't work either.

If you create a generic wall based family , or a face based family, you can create a void form and add height, width and depth parameters to that void to control the depth of the recess.

It worked. i still had to cut it from the wall. i thought just placing it would do so, i think this is what i was missing.

did you make sure that you cut the void from the wall before you finished the family?
