I don't know if this is possible in Revit, but here's what I want... In my standard plan view, I want my grid bubbles to show the specific number or letter than I named them with, however in a detail or section view, I would like the option of simply replacing the letter or number with "GRID". Can this be done without messing things up in other places? Will it require a new family?

Can't have two different designations for a grid bubble. The simplest way would be to turn off the grid bubble in your detail and manually draw it in with "GRID" as text. It will have no affect on the model grid.

Ok, thanks. That's what I figured I'd have to do. It would nice if future versions allow for more control over grid bubbles.

You could edit the grid bubble to have instance text that will be opaque and cover up the other number perhaps?
Or in the detail just have an opaque text style and type over the existing number.

As suggested, just create a detail component or generic annotatin object that you can paste over the grid bubble in the detail view. As long as it's the same plotted size as your standard grid bubble it will scale with the view as well.

Can I ask why you might want a grid to read something other than what it is?

Many broad/general details for columns usually have "Grid" or "TYP" instead of referring to an actual column location. That's the first reason off the top of my head.

Also many details my apply to multiple grid locations and instead of "Grid" all of the applicable grids would be stacked over gird line. It would be nice to be able to accomplish this without using text or DC.
It would also be nice to resize the grid in specific views. In scales smaller than 1/16"=1'-0" the grid bubbles are too large and look wierd. They also begin to overlap. Since grids are both detail and model objects it would be nice to be able to alter the detail portion in specific views.

Ah yes, well now that makes sense! I think in that case an annotation over the grid bubble that says GRID or TYP would work. Or maybe a label next to the grid bubble that said TYP that we could turn on or off per view would be appropriate. (thinking out loud)
Changing the actual grid to something else would change everywhere that grid appears in the project.

For now I'd just turn off the Grid bubble (check box) and place an annotation symbol at the "top" of the grid line. The annotation symbol can provide the variables you need to display. You can use different symbols for different scale conditions and information.

I personally think its good to show the actual location you created the detail, then when you use the ref. callout it says sim.
