Double Foundations

Here's a curious one:

I'm placing strip footings (foundations) under a masonry wall. When I split the components of the wall so that the interior furring and finishes end at the slab, my strip footing magically doubles. Can't seem to find any variables in footings or wall types that control this unwanted behavior. I would have thought that the footing attaches to the core of the wall assembly (seems logical) but not so.

Of course there are simple but annoying work-arounds to this problem, but I'm looking for a solution.

Any suggestions?

I still avoid the footing tool unless i have a very simple situation. I use walls instead.
