starting a new project on a relatively flat site within a developing. Site will need grading and compaction but has not been designed yet so pad height and adjacent street elevations are not established. What we've been doing in ACAD is to establish a project datum at one property corner, say 100'. we work the project from there with all levels being relative to the datum. Once the site elevations are known we revise the datum only.
Is there a way in revit to establish a project datum? Ideally, I would constrain all levels relative to the datum elevation so that when the site elevation is known, datum can be revised and all levels move and update accordingly.

What's the recommended method here?

You dont have to bother with that. You can always relocate a project in Revit. Just use for exemple Level 1 at 0' then you will be able to relocate.

In the US it is more common to use 100' as a datum. So I recommend moving your Level 1 to 100', rather than 0'. Do this with the move command. This will then let you use 100' as a project datum (Elevation Base = Project), and then use the shared coordinates for the real elevation (Elevation Base = Shared). Use Tools > Project Position/Orientation > Relocate Project to move the project. Or Tools > Shared Coordinates > Sepcify Coordinates at a Point.
