I am trying to notch out the treads on a stair I am modeling and have had little success. One side of the stair has an inset stringer with the treads are hanging over. In the project there is a series of structural tube steel member that I need to cut the hanging treads out around. I am able to modify the boundary line of the stair to get the desired outcome with the exception of the stringer which seem to react to the boundary line offset. I thought I could create an in-place family or something and do a cut geometry but that did not work either. Does anybody know of a way to achieve this?

Model it in three sections? More of a workaround than a solution though. And I'd guess not an acceptable workaround for someone that needs material takeoffs or shop drawings from it. I'm guessing this is another case where Revit wasn't built for these types of specific cases. To build it right I'd guess one would have to spend some time with the family editor. 'Tis unfortunate you can't use join/cut geometry on stairs as it would probably solve this particular issue.... but as robust as the stair tool is, it seems there's a lot of room for improvement.
