I don't know about you, but the new "H list" function in Max 2008 bugs me. I'm sure there was a great reason for it, but I have yet to discover it. Some of our guys discovered some ways around it and also some new scripts/plug-ins that are useful. Below is an excerpt from Steve Johnson from a thread at our little DV community. Thought I'd share:
"Good news is you should be able to get the old version (Scene Explorer) back if you look in:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user-name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2008 - 64bit\enu\defaults\MAX
(same for 32-bit folder as well; may need to turn on 'show hidden folders' in Windows)
and open up the CurrentDefaults.ini and scroll down to the bottom, you'll see a flag for:
[Scene Explorer]
SelectByNameUsesSceneExplorer=1
switch that to 0, save, restart max and you should be good to go (I hope, seems to fix all the other 'select by..' style dialogs)
The other selection tool that seemed to disappear was the 'selection floater' which used to be under the tools menu. It's still around, you just have to explicitly add it to the interface via customize."
I think Steve found this in the Area. I'd have to dig to confirm.
