Closet Shelving

Does anyone know why the "out of the box" closet shelving does not work? When i select if from the "components" it will not let me select a start point.

Do you see a little face/workplane icon next to the pulldown menu when it selected, if so click workplane instead of face.

One other thing. I have the shelf and rod in a corner situation. Is there any way to get the two to Miter together? I've tried using the "trim" tool, and the "join", neither of the two worked.
