I had a user today who could not save his file. When attempting a save or saveas he was presented with Document "X:\Projects\..." has a command in progress. Hit enter to cancel or [Retry]:

He claims this happens only when using tables in the file.

All of my attempts to cancel the mystery command failed and the only way that we could save the changes was to wblock the entire file.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I had this happen to a friends C3D install the other day. I had to install the latest service pack to get rid of it. Is the install up to date?

Is the install up to date?

Yup. I made the deployment with SP1 included.

The exact same thing would happen to me. Here's what support said:

I would recommend coping what you have into a new 2008 file that was created with a 2008 template to help minimize any version issues you may see because of using an older template file.

A simple recommendation to check the issue is to make sure that all other programs that are open are closed, that all tool palettes, other palettes(properties, dashboard, x-reference manager, or others) are closed, and to use the esc key twice to make sure that commands are existed. These are normally the causes of these problems. Sometimes we see this problem if you are using a custom lisp expression as well. You could try to unload any custom application, lisp, or arx files that may be loaded that could also be causing the problem.

If you have any questions or would like to add anything additional to this support request please feel free to reply to this email and I will be happy to help.

It hasn't happened in a while, but it still does sometimes. Usually when I'm using 3D orbit. Anyway, the way around it is to type SAVE in the command line, then choose the same file and overwrite it (you may have to exit and open the drawing after that, I can't remember). You don't have to close the drawing to do it. That should do it until next time it happens!!!

It hasn't happened in a while, ..

You've jinxed yourself now, buddy.

thanks for the responses. I have a fairly vanilla deployment. Simple LISPs and just network tool palettes (which i know that this user does not touch). All the templates were created from scratch in '08. I can't think of anything that would get in the way but the next time it comes up i'll try these things.

Well, between that and my computer restarting itself, it makes for an exciting day.
Yeah, you heard correctly. I'll be working on it and WHAMMO, it will just restart as if someone killed the power. It happens about once a month. ~shrug~

This solution is as good as any.

The first time this happened to me I was in Civil 3D 2007 creating styles. It would occur about twice a day. Each time I was in a new drawing that either had no objects or maybe a few C3D objects.

When I researched the problem I found posts on the NGs dating back to 2006 (or 2005) regarding the same problem. When I called Autodesk Support they told me I had to give them the precise steps to recreate the problem. So that went nowhere.

Since then, this has happened sporadicly to several of my users. We have about 60 CAD operators and it seems to happen once every two months or so. We are using LDT / C3D 2008 with the current SP.

In most cases we get around it by typing .SAVE (note the leading period). This has worked for everyone except for me when I was doing styles in C3D 2007. When it happened then I had no choice but to end task.

Same thing happens here on occasion. What we do is close the drawing and acad will ask if we want to save. Hit save and then reopen is / was our workaround. I will try the save at command line next time it happens.
Thanks for the better workaround.

We have had the same problem and if the save won't work we have found setting the Autosave to a minute and then renaming that file.
