Model Text as Carving

I saw a thread a while back that talked about making your model text look as though is was carved out of a surface. Could someone point me in the right direction. I was not able to find it using search.

Use model text and cut the mass with it

Does it have to be a mass specifically? I am trying to carve the text out of a masonry wall surface. I tried to use the cut geometry but it did not seem to work on the wall.
