Is there any stair design software out there that will work within the AutoCAD 2005 enviroment and would operate similarly to the old Softdesk system?

Use ADT to do this...it handles stairs quite well.

Check out CADdepot.com (http://www.caddepot.com/dcd1/Autodesk/) and do a search on stairs. You'll get a list of several programs to create stairs. Most if not all have a demo version.

True the user may have AutoCAD
with no-additives however if he has needs
to routinely do what could be considered
Architectural in nature it would be to his
benefit to have the tools at hand; rather
than trying to manage a host of third party
add ons to AutoCAD and subsequent issues
with those products not keeping pace with
Autodesk's appetite for new releases.

Unless this is a one time design requirement, I tend to agree with MJ on this. Call your Reseller and inquire as to the cost to upgrade your "Vanilla" license to that of "Architectural Desktop". I think you will be pleasently surprised. MJ is correct that there are a slew of "Productivity Enhancing routines" included in ADT and can justify the expense of the upgrade.
For more information, check out the following white paper (http://www3.autodesk.com/adsk/files/4411301_ADT_Productivity_WP.pdf)on the comparison between using vanilla autocad and ADT for architectural design and construction documentation. According to the experts, you can accomplish your design tasks more than twice as fast as with traditional autocad tools.
