View Full Version : Edit Time per Lynn Allen

Good day!
I received Lynn Allen's "Top 10 Tips for AutoCAD 2005" tip book and noticed there is a mention of EDIT TIME. I tried to this, but it seems to pop up a DOS window and somehow this just doesn't seem right so I backed out of the command.
Does anyone know what this is and how to properly utilize this to track my time per drawing?
Thanks!

Hi Mark
Please note I've *moved* this thread from the ACAD 2005 Wish List (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=57) Forum to this one as I feel this particular Forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.
Thanks, Mike

Judging by what you typed, you put a space in between edit and time. By doing that, you are running the edit command on a file named "time"
Try typing EDITTIME, with no space. That should work

Hi
As far as I'm aware there isn't such a command as EDIT within AutoCAD (but I could be totally wrong here).

Are you referring to the following snippet from Lynn Allen's "Top 10 Tips for AutoCAD 2005" -
<snip>
EDIT TIME (new to AutoCAD 2005)
Want to keep track of your actual
drawing time (and billable hours)?
EDITTIME to the rescue!
</snip>
If yes, have a browse through the 45 results obtained for "EDITTIME" on the Autodesk Discussion Groups (hopefully one or two of them may help a little) -
"EDITTIME" in "All AutoCAD Groups" found 45 results (http://discussion.autodesk.com/search%21execute.jspa?q=EDITTIME&objID=c8&numResults=25&rankBy=10001&source=forumlist%7C8&start=0)

When you type in edit at the command promote, you get the MS-DOS editor. When I type the EDITTIME command and hit F1 it pops up with the express tool help.

Hi
Is only true if it's been defined as an External Command within the Acad.pgp file.

By default it must be. I'm using the standard pgp file with only a few added alias. I didn't add any for the MS-DOS editor.

Hi Glenn
That could well be the case, I don't use the default Acad.pgp file.
Might be splitting hairs here but I was only trying to point out that EDIT is not an AutoCAD command.

When I type edittime, this is what I get. Also, when I type edit, it does pop up a dos box (see other attached drawing)

When I type, EDITTIME, I get nothing except a prompt to hit F1, which then takes me to the help window. If I type, EDIT, I get a DOS window. Strange....... maybe this doesn't work??

Hi
Could be totally wrong here (don't have AutoCAD 2005) -
EditTime was (is) an Express Tool command, therefore if it's not been added to AutoCAD 2005 as an inbuilt command you will need to have Express Tools loaded (separate install from the AutoCAD 2005 CD) for it to function.

EDITTIME works great on my computer - too bad we wrote a script that ties into our billing system a long time ago. Useful for those who haven't spent the time programming though!
