I am working on a fairly complex log cabin, and am wondering how to do half-log walls on the exterior. I have read about adding sweeps to walls, but is there a way to have doors and windows punch out instantly like they do in standard walls?
Also, how are the corner overlaps done?
I would appreciate any information on this.
Sincerely,
Nora

Do a forum search for "logs"...there have been quite a few threads on the subject. Particularly check out http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=345&highlight=logs the post by eegbertson has a nice sample of a little log cabin that you can dissect.
The main idea is that you can create a wall type that has log profile sweeps which are cuttable...so the openings will automatically be cut. You can also pull the ends of the sweeps to create the corners.
Be warned, if you are doing a large complex house with log walls with sweeps you better have a computer with a lot of processing power!

Check out http://www.caddigest.com/subjects/revit/tutorials.htm and look for "sculpture walls".

Thanks for the info. I put the logs on the cabin today, and got everything to work, except for the garage doors. The sweep is not going over top of the dorrs for some reason.
I'll research the sites you suggest.
Thanks,
Nora

Nora,
Would you mind posting an image of your model when you are finished?
Thanks!

What is probably happening is that the insertion point of the sweep and the top of the garage door are at the same elevation, so the door cuts the sweep. You'll probably have to "flip" the sweep at that elevation so the insertion point of the sweep is at the top of the sweep instead of the bottom.
There are two options for fixing this…
1. If the sweep is like a “tongue and groove” profile, I would do this…
Open up the profile you've created for the log, then do a save-as and give it a different name. Move the profile so that the insertion point is at the top of the profile instead of the bottom…then load it into the project.
2. If the sweep profile is the same at the top and the bottom, I would do this…
Inside the wall type, FLIP the profile at the elevation of the top of the door and change the location height. Or if you did hosted sweeps outside the wall type, flip the sweep (in elevation with the flip arrows) and change the elevation of the profile.
If you've put the sweeps inside the wall type, go to the sweeps and change the profile used for the sweep at the elevation above the garage door to the new one created. You'll have to adjust the location as well otherwise the new sweep will overlap the one below.
Since the insertion point of the profile will no longer intersect (or touch) the opening of the garage door, you should be good to go.
