i am in need of one on a gable end......i need it in the diagonal on both sides and meeting at the ridge

Depending on the profile required you can do it as a fascia or as in-place sweep family. You can pick the edge of the gable end in a 3D view and use that to define the path for your sweep.

Dimitri's methods are probably the ones to try first. If those don't work think about using an in-place sweep.

One thing I always try to keep in mind is the use of Reference Planes. Set a reference plane in plan at the edge of the rake on the gabled end. Then when drawing the sweep path set the work plane by picking a plane. This will automatically throw you out to an elevation. From there draw the shape. One other trick I use is to draw a detail section in elevation at the angle perpendicular to the roof slope. This will typicall give more accurate results. Hope this was of some help.
