Building pad in a linked file.

We are working on a development with several buildings. I have a seperate grade file that is linked into each building file. I have put a pad for each building on the grade file, and it cuts the grade like I would expect. When I link the grade file into a building file, the grade is no longer cut. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your brilliance.

A little more info... it works in plan, but not section or 3D.

check your phase filter for the 3D view set it to show complete
if your linked file is not set to custom view
