I have a group of tif files from areal photos that I want to insert into a drawing with MAPIINSERT. The images seem to insert in the correct locations, but the image display is not what I expected. The images show as very grainy with a series of black lines across them. But they open just fine in Photoshop. What could the problem be?

...the tiff file format. Although there are hundreds of tif formats (its a loose specification), acad only supports just a few. You need to find an editor that can save the tiff file in a format that acad can use. Trial and error. The editor that comes with Snagit works for me. You mention you opened it in Photoshop. Try doing SaveAs. Most raster programs have an Options button in the SaveAs dialog where you can try different settings. Make sure its using Cals Group 4.

Along with the tif files, I received a series of support files -- one for each tif. For some tifs, there are .aux files; for the others, there are tfw files. I know that these other files control where the individual tif images are located related to each other (it's a GIS 'thing'). If I do convert these tifs to another tif format, will I loose that location control?

You shouldn't, but to be on the safe side, keep a back-up of the original & tinker with copies.

Well, sho' 'nuff it did. After I saved it through Photoshop I tried inserting the tif with MAPIINSERT. Instead of inserting at the correct coordinates ACAD put it at 0,0.

As a work-around, I took a jpeg I created from the tiff and moved it to the position of the tif with the black lines and sized it accordingly. It's not a pretty fix, but it werks.

Glad you found a work around.

I finally got a resolution to this problem yesterday. It turns out that the tiff files that our client sent were in a certain format -- a compressed format for My-carp-station (yuk!). ACAD just didn't like that format. Fortunately, the our client was able to send me .sid files. Now, all is good.

That's great. Glad you found out what was causing it.

That's what I suspected. There are less than half a dozen tif formats that acad can read.

Maverick91,

when you did the save as, did you save it as the same name? the .aux and .tfw files have to have the same name as the .tif file to work.

Just for future reference!
