View Full Version : Curtain Wall Mullion with two materials

I have a situation where a framed "grid" will be infilled with windows. But the grid really lends itself to a Curtain Wall, where the mullions are 1' wide and 2' deep. However, they also need to be a stucco finish on the outside, and gyp finish on the inside. It is this part that gives me pause, as I can see no way to make a mullion with two materials. If there is, I would love to hear about it!
Failing that, my initial thought is to make a 2 pick family that is wall hosted, but cleanups at the corner could be a pain. This would be the stucco bits, with a bit of wall to then host a bunch of windows
The attached (SketchUp) image will give you an idea of what I am trying to do.

Thanks,
Gordon

What if you copy and paste you curtain wall, so you have a duplicated one. On the second curtain wall, you select your panels and turn them into "Empty" panels. You will only remain with millions. Now you can edit the profile fo these mullions and turn them into the gypse you want. Edit also the exterior mullions to make them narrow since now you have the gypse into another mullion.

And you are free to assign different materialsto them.

Just an idea.

I'd probably do the fins as a separate wall type with end wraps since the whole grid assembly sits proud of the main wall. The main exterior wall would host the punched windows and a join geometry would clean it all up. You'd have to mess around with wall function and wrap settings to make sure it cleaned up the way you need it to but it shouldn't be a problem.

See the attached image. These are complex mullions created by more than one curtain wall and therefore, more than one mullion. But since the other have empty panels, you just see everything as a whole.

Hey Gordon,

I agree with Dimitri..,.(what a surprise!)
That main building wall grid layout would be framed and skinned just like any exterior wall. I would just edit the wall's profile to set up the grid layout and then insert the window/curtain wall.

And, nice modeling Andre!

Good Luck

No need to edit the wall profile if you use the 'automatically embed in walls' option for the windows.

Not knowing EXACTLY what you were looking for, I came up with this..

I'm having to host this RVT file on my server (since it's 2.04mb and you can only have 2.00mb files uploaded here), so the download may be a bit slow... be patient: http://gibsonhh.info/curtainWall.rvt

Or you can view it here using freewheel. (http://freewheel.autodesk.com/dwf_S.aspx?path=ADSKFW%3a%2f%2f15%5c1b%5ca2%5c14%5c8f%5c0f%5c74%5c4b%5c81%5c73%5ca5%5c0c%5c3c%5c7f%5c52%5c1e%5cd8%5c3f%5cce%5cc1%5ccurtainWall.dwf&sec=1&px=206.0689&py=38.3563&pz=-124.9608&tx=162.2792&ty=17.4447&tz=-107.7146&ux=-0.3778&uy=0.9139&uz=0.1488&fx=14.9109&fy=35.8167&proj=orth&q=high)

Took about 15 minutes including 300dpi render :D

Needs some touch up, but could be a spring board. The only problem with this approach would be that the Stucco/gyp would not be recorded as mullions, but instead as curtain panels :(

edit: I'm having trouble with the link to the RVT file, and I'm not sure if it's internet problems at my office or at my house, so if you can't get to the RVT file let me know and I'll email it to you.
