when i render the view with the view settings shown in the attached doc and the rendering settings set to use the view settings for shadow, revit shows the shadows wrong... two projects are currently doing this. it seems like it ignores the view setting no matter what i do.

top left is picked in both dialogue boxes and the shadows are correct in shaded view. the interupted rendering in the background shows the shadows from the upper right. since i've picked the checkbox 'relative to view' and upper left, true north shouldn't be a factor in the rendering, right?

There's a render setting whether to use the sun settings from view or not.

i've added a screen shot of the settings dialogue so you can see that i've told it to use the settings from the view. if i've told revit to use the views shadow settings then the shadows should be the same wether i'm looking at a shaded or raytraced shot but they are opposite. we have two files doing this right now. i've tried hitting the 'reset' button and picking the 'upper left' option but it still renders the sun from the upper right.

I've had trouble using the sun settings from the view so I uncheck that box & enter what I want to see in the SUN tab. Elevation/Azimuth & Compass views - just grab the arrow head & rotate.
