I work in the US automotive industry.
My company has hooked up with European partners that
will help globalize the business.

US is using 3rd angle projection for engineering drawings.
Europe is using 1st angle projection.

Why would someone want to use 1st angle projection?
What are the benefits?

None.

You got it right, we got it wrong.

I don't think the answer is that simple.
Somewhere along the line 1st angle projection was chosen.

Does it relate to part position?

I really think it's one of the cases where the US learned from others' mistakes.

You draw (3rd angle) an elevation right next to the side of the part that you're viewing. In 1st angle, it's drawn right over at the far side of the part.

My favourite example is a conveyor roller (long and narrow) with different shaft details at each end. We draw each end detail at the opposite end from the viewing point. :screwy:

Edit: of course, if all views and sections are properly labeled, it doesn't really matter where you put the views.

I am with you. My group has to be careful though. We do not want to discredit our European partners just because we draft a certain way in the US.
