Hi
Is anyone using RAC 2008 with Windows Vista? If you use 4GB of RAM, will you experience better performance with Larger projects than with Win XP with 2GB of RAM? With Mental Ray in RAC 2009, will having a better graphics card help with rendering times?
Thanks

Graphics card will have no effect on rendering times. All processing of the renders is done on the CPU core. Revit 2009 rendering will take advantage of up to 4 cores on a single CPU.

Jeff, does that mean that if I have 2no. 4 core processors in my maching that it will access all 8? I am just having a play with specs for my next computer and it is possible that I may go this route, but it will be partly lead by what advantage the various programmes I use will be able to take of it.

Very nice to hear that I can fully use my quad core!
Will Revit generally use 4 cores, or is it just for rendering?

It will only take advantage of 4 cores on 1 CPU. Revit will not be able to "see" the other CPU.

Revit will only be utilizing the 4 cores during rendering. The main application will still be limited to 1 core.

Hi Jeff,
I have a couple of questions:
Is it possible to set up a rendering farm for MR using Revit? Basically, is it possible to render a scene in Revit between various computers (similar to MAX)?
The fact that Revit can't see the second CPU will be fixed in a patch or is it something to be addressed further down the road?
Thanks :)

No this will not be possible. If you need the capibilities of a render farm you will need 3dsMAX.

Thanks :)
I am not aware of any plans one way or the other on the future of multi-processor support.

I think that Revit will see 2 processors, but only up to 4 cores. If you have a dual duo-core, then Revit will use both processors up to 4 cores. If you have a dual quad-core then Revit will use up to four cores of either one or both processors. This is what I have heard from the Factory, but I may be wrong. I will try to verify and let you know for sure. Jeff H may have better info than me.

Scott is correct. I might have not spoken exactly correctly. The rendering process is limited to 4 cores but those could be on 2 CPUs.

Scott,
does that mean, our projects are going to run faster, if Revit is going to use all 4 cores or dual processors? If i am not wrong, Revit 2008 uses only a single processor. If its a dual core, does RAC 2008 currently use it?

To the Macbook Pro Revit club.....
Just wondering what you guys are going to do with your Macbook Pro, knowing that Autodesk recommends an Intel™ Core® 2 Duo 2.40GHz with 4GB of ram to run RAC 2009. My brand new MBP doesn't even meant these requirements. I would have to upgrade the ram, which would probably last me up to one release.

Winn,
I think you missed the main point made earlier. Revit will only use multi-core processing when rendering. Otherwise, it will only use a single core of a single processor.

Cheers Jeff & Scott! That helps with this next computer you just saved me about £500!
To Autodesk, I think that it would be not too exposing to be able to say that you will never re-code Revit to access multiple core processors or that you will/are working on this but that it is not likely in the next couple of releases. At least then we can carry out medium term investment planning without fear.
Just an note not a gripe . . said with a smile.

So when should I be expecting the money order for my share of the £500 savings?

Wife's got a bun in the oven . . the money vaporises the minute I say I don't need it!! ha . . .
I could push as far as a small bottle of rum, if you find yourself in the UK! ;)

Does anyone know if there will be any differences to these specifications once the 64bit version of Revit is released, or will it be the same? Thanks.

I found this breifly on the Revit Structure page.
(edited)
Revit 2009 64-Bit Technical Specifications
Additional system requirements for Revit 2009 64-bit
Unless noted otherwise all requirements are identical to Revit 2009 32-bit
-Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Vista 64-bit (Revit 2009 64-bit cannot be installed on a 32-bit Windows operating system.)
-Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40 GHz or equivalent 64-bit AMD Athlon processor

I thought Autodesk wasn’t going to release a 64bit version of Revit 2009 right away. It seemed to be hinted it would come as a service pack. Is this correct?

That's the rumor mill...no 64-bit at this release, perhaps in the future near or otherwise... They ain't gonna say more till they say more...

My old celeron laptop with built in graphics can still handle revit 2009. The rendering time isn't that slow.
