View Full Version : Handling Large Drawing Files!!!

I am currently working on a 3D model which has a file size of 63MB.
Opening the drawing files takes approximately 8 minutes & working on the model is becoming tedious, because AutoCAD 2008 keeps aborting during various commands.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problems?
What is the best way to handle large 3D Models?
My PC is high spec 4GB Ram, 512MB Graphics Card, Quad Core Intel Processor 1.86GHz.

I feel your pain. The last model I found myself working with was quite misleading with a 2Mb file size. In reality since I did everything as an X-ref, it was in excess of 1Gb.
What I found is that after you get above a certain file size, you almost have to make 2D drawings off of the 3D model. This was much to my dismay.
Hopefully Autodesk will come up with a solution to let us deal with these larger files with connectivity akin to their other software packages. When I was working with this project last I was wondering if I should just tell my boss its time to by Inventor or Solid Works?

Ya!I agree that working with Xref. Then if you modeled with solid, you must use "brep" after you scene finish. It means delete for solid history.

You could try modifying your boot.ini file to include the /3GB switch since you have 4GB of RAM. It seems to help when working with large files.
After the modification upon boot up you get one screen that gives you the option to boot either the way you normally have or with the /3GB option. Be forewarned that some hardware drivers do not coexist well with this tweak. If you run into unexplained problems then it would be adviseable to remove the modification to the boot.ini file.

Your model exceed my first CAD systems total memory and HD space, FYI.
You need to make use of lots of XREFS, and have most of them unloaded at most times. Besides getting a system with much higher specs, or figuring out how to reduce your geometry, you're going to struggle with a model that large on ANY 32bit system. Its not an program limitation, its a Operating System limitation (specifically memory allocation).
