Which type of line style improvements were you looking at?

There were no specific changes to line styles in RAC 2009. There were some additions to the linework tool being able to be used on imported and linked DWG instances.

You can now override the linework of elements in linked files, which is a significat feature.

since we are thinking about line styles in general...we are now able to not only control linestyles of phases (exiting, demo, new and temporary) in addition to the pattern

But I still wonder which improvements he would like to see

My guess would be in line text or something along those lines.

One of the major complains that I heard about revit is the poor line quality of its elevations.
Do you kown if revit 2009 have addressed this issue? I konw there are some work arounds and overides line work but those are not very elegant solutions. How hard can be for a such a sofisticate peice of software to recognize which panes are closer to the viewer and jus represente them with a heavier linewieght?

Hi Wagurto...
unfotunately...I am the wrong guy to hear this complaint. I don't think that an automatic solution will ever make the elevations look perfect. So prior to 2008, although the process was longer than I wished (10 min per elevation of our typical projects), I just controlled the lineweights as I wish to see my elevation....part of this process was to make each window's corner (either top right or top left) a heavier lineweight to make it read better.....if I wanted a 30 second solution, then I gave a wide line silhouettes and added shadows....

Now, in 2008, I still go through the process mentioned above, but instead of taking me 10 minutes...I believe it takes me just a minute or 2 maximum. Just select portions of the building (either in elevation or in plan) then in my elevation view...override the lineweights. DONE!

That's it....

Oh one more thing....
I get angry when I hear complaints about Revit's Elevations....
I then ask the people who printed them how long they actually spent on making the elevation look good......always the answer is 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds....they just printed it wihtout working on them....well, what did they expect?

Hi Luigi and thaks for the tips. Would you mind to shere with me one of your 10 minutes makeup elevations? I am curious of how good looking your elevations are.
Thanks in advance.

Garbage in, garbage out ;) When doing things by hand, if you didn't put enough time and effort, your elevations would look like dung too, so I fully agree with you Luigi! My Revit elevations look as good as in CAD...actually better as I can turn shadows on and not have to figure out manually where shadows should fall and because they are more accurate and contain more detail.

Having said that however, Revit could get us closer to having more readable elevations if sweeps in walls wouldn't assume the lineweight that a wall does (especially when using silhouette edges) and also by making building elements in the distance "recede" with some elevation control similar to ADT/ACA, by controlling lineweight automatically.

On the larger projects we have run into some performance issues when altering the lineweights of the elevations. Commands will tend to hang for a few seconds in the elevation view (even without the shadows on). Have you experienced this?

Also if you don't lock constrain the line work to your geometry you will get a mess if you change something in you model. If you constrain any single line to your model you will pay a price with performance of your model. It should be a more elegant solution to this issue.

You don't have to redraw the line work, just use the line work tool to override the weight/ style shown. This does not require locking or constraining anything and should update when you move the object. It is a view specific operation so you would have to override in each elevation, but still a much better solution that manually drafting over the top.

Hi Wagurto, find below the link of a post of mine back in 09/2006
http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=47550&highlight=elevation&page=4

This one shows the 30 second version...not the 10 minutes

Sorry, I can't say I have experience irregular slowdowns...
