i have a large building....large primary structural members are metal building components (generic models costomized to profile of building) they work fine. Another part of the building is structural steel with columns and barjoists.....when i place the columns ( ie, steel shape from library)....inside a wall the columns disapear (well, they are "there" i just cant see them).....anyway to get around this?

Seems like I've had problems with that before.... may have to do with view range settings. What does your view range look like in the offending view?

Are you sure you are using structural columns? If the family you are using is not structural column and is just column, then maybe the option "Automatically Joins Geometry" found when you edit the family (under Settings > Family Category and Parameters) will make the column disappear inside the wall.
Revit will pop up a message and let you know that, though...

I have had structural columns disappear when they are completely inside a wall.
I would check to make sure the view range doesn't have Unlimited in there somewhere, as that tends to do screwy things with the graphics in the view. In RCP views, setting the top to unlimited makes a hidden line view appear as a wireframe view.

i've unintentionaly changed "something" and it all seems to be working fine (columns in walls are visable)....i was about to make pdfs to post to add clarity to discription.....but now it seems to be working fine, so i will keep your comments in mind in the future and test them if condition repeats itself.....
thanks for your help.....maybe i shouldn't drink and Revit
