converting to earlier versions

Can we convert revit arch. files to earlier versions ?

isn't there any utility to do so ?

The simple answer is no.

The not so simple one can be better answered by the Dev. Team, but my view of it is that in order to develop and keep at the cutting edge with new technology like this being backward compatable is not practical.

My suggestion is to be on subscription and upgrade with each new edition. If you are working with others (engineer, MEP) that use Revit then update in tandem to make sure that there are not problems on the sharing front.

What are you supposed to do when then new release was not full developed and you cant get any work done and want to go back to the previous version because it worked but can't because the software is so cutting edge that it is unuseable so the user has to suck it up and cope? <\rant>

Pull out the server backups and lose a couple days of work.

For the future, you might want to always do a 'Detach from Central' copy to keep as a fail safe. Then you can always switch back to that file if the upgrade isn't satisfactory.

Is it possible to install Revit 2009 'side by side' without removing 2008? Then, if it it doesn't work, you can go back right away to a model file saved in 2008 and run in Revit 2008?

I always wait a couple of months after a new release before upgrading the office for this very reason. I would rather read about the problems with the new release than have to suffer through them first hand

You can still have revit 2008 running on your computer and install 2009. We have just done so, and found that Revit 2009 seems to be slower and worse graphics. The overlay maps tick box in graphics setting is not there anymore.
