Hi, I am relatively new to the revit community and the program itself and I was hoping some people might be able to point me in the right direction on how to put together my project. There are just a few things I am trying to do in revit that I did not learn in my class.

First, my building is mostly made of walls. I transfered a mass from sketch up and pretty much made a series of walls. the issue is that I want to transform these walls and put in a glass storefront system. i haven't figured out how to do that without leaving little segments of the wall in place.

Secondly, I need help with putting in a glass elevator. or an elevator with glass sides.

Thirdly, I want to know how I can install a custom window into a wall. actually more like a window mullion system. I have a wall that consists of diamond shaped windows of varying sizes and proportions.

Lastly I am wondering if there are any translucent wall types or materials available in revit.

Thanks. I hope that isn't too much.

What you need is to learn about curtain walls...or curtain systems... To add a curtain wall to an existing wall, you just draw the wall with the height you need, you go to type properties and you will see a checkbox that makes your wall automatically embeded.

Curtain walls, can be used for the elevator too.
As for materials, I think we are all newbies to rendering with Revit, since it is the first release with mental ray.

Lastly I am wondering if there are any translucent wall types or materials available in revit.

You can duplicate a wall type and change the material.
For example, duplicate the default "Generic - 200mm" wall type to something like "Transparent - 200mm".

1. Select a wall
2. Right mouse button, Element properties
3. Hit Edit / New...
4. Duplicate...
5. Enter the new name
6. In Type Parameters edit the Structure.
7. In the Material column change the By Category material to Glass.
8. Hit OK until you surface back to the view.

This is how you could get a transparent wall. If you want translucency, you could lower the transparency of the material.
In the long run, you'll have to master the curtain walls just as dpasa mentioned.

Augwalts, welcome to Augi.

As far as transparency goes, are you trying for the shaded view or rendered?

Are you using 2009, or an earlier version?

Revit has its own render engine for shaded views, and you can simply adjust the transparency of the material of the wall with the slider under the material category - THIS DOES NOT affect either the Accurender or the mental Ray material - both of which have to be added separately.

Go to the AUGI Training pages (ATP HERE (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=495)) There are a few examples of the questions you are asking. You'll need to download and look at all three sections of the tutorial.

Obviously, the assignment of materials in Mental Ray is an entirely different process, but the concept still holds true if you are using Mental Ray.

I think you already find the solution from the replies above. Unless you post some screens, not much further suggestions could be made.
For your glass elevator, if you are still in concept stage, using the curtain wall to make it is fine, but after the concept stage, I guess you pretty much know what the glass elevator should look like, then I suggest you build a family for such elevator. Because it is help for long run, rather than using curtain wall to work around it.

Also welcome to the world of BIM.
