Annotative leaders do not update

I have an existing drawing that was done in AutoCAD 2007 and when I open the same drawing with 2008, and hover over the leader line, the annotative symbol show on my screen when it is not an annotative leader. Why is this?

In 2008 leaders are objects on which you can apply an annotation scaling.
Annotation scaling tools are on the Status Bar. Hover over them, my guess is the one which automatically adds scales to annotative objects is ON.
