Copy/monitor grids - behavior

I'm trying to copy/monitor the grids from a linked structural file. When I copy the grid lines, it gives me warnings that the Grid Head - Circle annotation was changed to Grid Head - Circle 1 or 2 or whatever to avoid conflicts. I don't understand why this is happening, because after I copy in the grids, I can go to Purge Unused and get rid of those duplicate types. They're not being used, so why were they created in the first place?

I have had this similar issue and the best I can guess is that it creates the duplicate by default just because it recognizes another element is in the same place. But I'm not sure if thats the real reason.
