I downloaded the familys from the autodesk website and cannot get them to open in Revit MEP 2008.I get an error message "File.rfa was saved in a later version of Revit and cannot be retrieved in this version." Is there a program or way to save them to a previous version?

They are in 2009 format and they are not backwords compatable.

Way to go Autodesk! No better way to ensure people keep upgrading and buying new licenses....

Revit has never been backwards compatible, so I'm not sure why you are so surprised. Most Revit users are on Subscription, and therefore can upgrade at any time. No need to buy a new license.

I have been trying to find a batch conversion utility for converting our RMEP 2008 files into 2009. Is there one out there or am I just missing an easy fix? Thanks!

on the installation CD, you should find an UpgradeFamilies.bat file, and instructions on how to use it.

Revit older versions, installer and families, are still available for download on the Autodesk site - just look down at the bottom of the 2009 download page, you'll see links to older versions, and once on that page, the family download is also available.
Of course, any new families will only be available in the current release, which I believe is quite reasonable.
