Does anyone know how to fix Navisworks so that when I try and refresh it doesn't crash every time? Right now to get the most updated .nwf file I have to shut down and restart the model which with our model files takes quite along time.

I don't know but I am having the same problem and it is annoying to the point where I don;t use Navis unless I absolutely HAVE TO.
If you can fix please let me know...

To prevent a crash in NavisWorks. With NavisWorks open, go to the file dropdown, and pick "open a new drawing". Now switch to autocad and save your autocad as a .nwc (comand: nwcout ) and then go back to NavisWorks which is still open as a new drawing and in the file dropdown open your .nwf that is in the list of last used drawings.

I am using MEP 2009 and they eliminated that command after the 2008 version, don;t ask why 'cause I have no clue. It was very helpful... Any other thoughts?

Increase the amount of memory Navisworks is allowed to utilize can fix some of these crashes.

Well, It's back!
I have a freshly formatted, new install of everything on my Dell M90.
Win XP, MEP 2009, and Navis 2009.1 with 4 megs of ram and the switch is on giving me 3.25 megs.
I can't refresh my drawing in Navis more than one time without crashing (usually I crash on the first attempt).
I have searched on several forums for answers and tried everything that I could find.
I have the latest video card driver already (NVIDIA Quadro FX 2500M 156.83 )
I increased the Navis memory limit.
I turned off occulusion culling.
I turned off Hardware acceleration.
I turned on Hardware acceleration and occulusion culling.
I turned off "merge xrefs".
I made all of the files that I append .nwd's.
I've crashed 30 times today minimum HELP!

Those with frequent crashing problems using dual monitors might find relief by going to a single large monitor. Its like working with one hand tied behind your back but its better than getting no work done at all. Win XP 32 bit with 4 Gb memory on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop - NW 2010 and Acad 2010.

Thinking about it, I didn't have any issues until I loaded the 2007, 2008, 2009 AutoCAD ADT & MEP Object Enablers.
I had a few jobs that had nwd's posted and I was having no issues. I loaded the O.E.'s and that was when it began.

I installed 2010 Friday mid morning and was able to work into the evening without a crash.
I'm not sure why it's working but I'll take it as progress!
If I have further problems I'll update this topic.

Just a comment of hardware as potential cause -
I have access to a decent workstation for rendering, but generally use navisworks (2009.1 previously now 2010) on an ordinary Dell latitude notebook 1.8Ghz 3G ram, duel screening on a 21" monitor. I get crashes in navisworks maybe once a week, but never refreshing from an autocad model, even with large files, but then I'm still using 2004. The only performance option change I use is to uncheck the guaranteed frame rate.

We were able to fix this problem by unchecking Hardware Acceleration in the global options/display properties.
