Hello everybody.... I came across a very strange behaviour when assigning material to 3ds max 2009 (design)....I have file linked a file from autocad architecture 2008 and when i try to assign a material to a slab for instance...the material is assigned to every slab with the same material.... how can i "tell" max not to assign the material to every object but just to specific one...
is this normal behaviour...In max 2008 it was not !!!

In material editor, use the eye dropper to bring in the material. hold down ctrl+left mouse button and drag it from one sample slot to another. Rename it and adjust it accordingly. Select the desired slab and click the apply material to selected object. If it still applies to every slab then double check your import settings. See if there is a box checked that says something like "one object per material type" - that might not be exact wording - going from memory.

thank you very much for your response. Ihave already done what you suggested but probably in this new max version the import procedure has changed.... that means that in order to change the material of an individual slab (for instance) it has to belong to a different style when you create it in autocad architecture. ok it is good in order to assign materials quicly to objects that belong to the same style....but when you are in max you could have the option as max 2008 to assign materials independend of the style the objects belong....I don't know still if i am doing something wrong !!!

It sounds like you have Material Propogation turned on which results in Max applying the current material to the current object and any other object of the same style with that material on it as well. To turn this off, go into the material editor and select the Options menu and select Propogate Materials to Instances to uncheck this feature.
