View Full Version : Dimensions!

I am really disappointed because I can't understand how to place some dimension lines. When I add dimensions, everything is OK when it comes to walls, floors etc. The problem is I can't find the way to make "aligned" -as we said it in AutoCAD- dimensions.
Every time I start the command, Revit is looking for a reference. What do I have to do to choose two random points in the middle of the room and place a dimension line?
Please check the attachment to see what I mean.
No1: From face to the end of the center line
No2: Random dimensions
Please explain because I am very new to Revit
Thank you for your time,

Am I missing something? Why would you want to do this?
Generally Revit will snap to the easiest reference in dimension terms. If you need to get to a more complex point in space you can use the tab key while hovering over the approximate point you are aiming at and if there is some defined geometry there then it will eventually pick it up, so it is possible to dimension between non parallel walls by selecting the end points of them - this is broadly equivalent to aligned dimensioning in autocad

Thank you for your answer, but let me use an example
No1 : A car need a space of 2.25x4.50m. So I have to show how far this car can
go inside the room. That means I want a dimension from one wall the other at the point that the dimension will be approx. 2.25m.(Let's say the dashed line but I don't want any line there). How can I do this?
Starting the command, the wall face from wall1 highlights but I get nothing when I place the mouse near wall2
No 2 - 4 : I have to show the distance there, without the lines. (Distance between property line and building)
Please let me know if there is something I can do

You have to have an object for the dimension to snap to. For lines, you can use reference planes, model lines, or detail lines.
If you use reference planes, keep in mind that if you either turn them off in the visibility dialog, or have them not print in the print dialog, the dimensions will disappear with them.
One method that I use is to create a new line style subcategory under Settings/Line Styles menu. Accept the default black color and linewidth 1.
Then use this new detail line to either draw or pick/offset at points you want to dimension to. Then add the dimensions.
When done, go back to Settings / Line Styles, and change the color of the line subcategory created above to white. The lines disappear, but the dimensions stay.

Revit insists on measuring distances between referenced objects and would not allow dimension to an empty space.
In your picture dimension No.1 may be confusing because depending on the place where measurement is taken distances would be different. If you do insist on having such dimensions then you will need to fake it by either making a line of background color as Andrew suggests or making a very short but visible line to reference.
Additionally please keep in mind that you may place dimensions not only to lines and wall faces but also to line/wall ends. Just press TAB as many times as necessary while picking dimension reference until desired vertex highlights.
See attached image where just one of dimensions had to be faked.

I usually start with the walls perpendicular, then draw two reference planes set at 600 back from the wall faces, then a wall between these two planes and trim.
( Takes longer to type than to draw it  )
