View Full Version : Error after closing Revit 2009

Lately I've been getting an Application Error message a few seconds after closing out of Revit 2009. It has the red "X" symbol (typical Windows error message) and reads:

The instruction at "0x0114ef7a" referenced memory at "0x00000020". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

Looks like what happens when you do something that causes the machine to run out of memory. However this is AFTER I've already closed the program.

Any ideas? I'm on a quad-core machine with 4 GB RAM.

Please file a support request on this. I've been seeing this since the beta, but support is telling me they aren't seeing it.

I see it here too. Every single day, when i close Revit at the end of the day.

Dual core Xeon, 4 gigs ram (3.25 visible on winXP32) and 3gig switch enabled.

Runs fine, but gives me a memory error shutting down Revit.

I don't get it when Rvt simply crashes.

I used to get this error daily, but now not so much -- which I don't understand

I get the same error maybe 3 times a week.

We were getting this after first upgrading to R2009, but I don't think it's happened in a while. We surmised it had something to do with upgrading projects/families.

Fortunately, it just seems to be more quirky 2009 behavior and doesn't appear to affect the actual use of Revit.

(yes, we did file a support request, but they didn't seem to know what to make of it and after about a week, it was closed).

Take a look at the Processes under the Windows Task Manager. What I find sometimes is that when I close Revit even though Revit disappears off the screen, the Processes still show Revit is running with a lot of memory usage. Slowly the memory usage will go down and Revit.exe will eventually disappear from the processes list. Then if needed Revit can be started again. I also have a dual quad with 5 GB RAM.

This doesn't really solve the issue other than making me be more patient!

Well I did not get the memory error message when closing Revit at the end of the day yesterday.

I wonder if maybe it happens when I've had both 2008 and 2009 open at the same time?

I get it on both machines that R2009 is installed on in the office. Same thing everytime Revit is shut down.

Well I had 2009 open this morning, then opened 2008 to print something, then closed 2008. Now I just closed 2009, and no errors.

Seems to be random, but I'm pretty sure it only happens when I have had both 2009 and 2008 open at the same time.

Happens to me all the time, and i havent had 08 opened on this machine in some time... Sometimes i have two sessions of 09 opened, but it doesnt seem to do it with the second session, lol.

It doesnt bother me much, since its happening after i close out. But its weird...

I haven't seen this error in Revit but I get it every time I close AutoCad when I am using a borrowed license. Dont know if its the same thing or not.

Per Steve Stafford's blog:

Current Revit Builds

* RAC 2009 - 20080321_1900
* RST 2009 - 20080321_1900
* RME 2009 - 20080321_1900
* -------
* RAC 2008 - 20080101_2345 (sp4)
* RST 2008 - 20080101_2345 (sp4)
* RME 2008 - 20080101_2345 (sp4)

There is only one build of 09 out. There is talk about a new build being release in the next couple of weeks, but nothing official.

I sent an error report to Autodesk - got an email back stating I didn't have the latest build - it had a link but it is the same as mine.
Oh well.

Has anyone found a solution or cause to this error? The error posted at the beginning of this thread. It seems that most of our workstations are experiencing this error, but as stated above, it is very random, and I haven't noticed any pattern.

I think I can rule out having 2008 and 2009 open at the same time as the cause, since I have several workstations that no longer have 2008 installed that are experiencing the problem.

When I'm answering on the forum I always have Revit 9.1, 2008 and 2009 opened at the same time to switch between them depending on the problem I'm trying to solve. Up to now, never had any problem when closing them...

I've been getting this error every day for the past week, prior to that I had no problems. I haven't been able to identify any triggers or patterns. Very odd.

We have one workstation that started having this exact problem about a week ago with one project. We audited the central file from another computer, saved a new central , and made a new local on the problem machine. It didn't happen again for a while, but then it started happening with every project. We uninstalled and reinstalled Revit, and now (at least on the initial test) it seems to be fixed.

To those also having this problem - do you notice any other problems in other programs? It seems like when it happens on my machine, it is accompanied by issues of not being able to open other programs like Photoshop, or even open a small PDF file in Adobe.

I'm still concerned that there may be a memory leak or something, but I'm not sure how to find out.

I noticed that this thread stopped a few months ago. I have noticed it is still happening now and again. Did it stop for everyone else with a build?

Still happens for me in RAC 2009 WU3. I haven't seen this in RAC 2010 yet, but I haven't had a lot of testing time with it yet.

Unfortunately, I haven't worked in Revit for a couple months now since my last job had an Autocad deliverable. When I was working in Revit a couple months ago I was still having the error. I don't remember the error having any consequences to my drawings. Just an annoyance.

This is the last post I could find on this subject, so I wanted to make an update. I have not seen the memory error in 2010 upon closing, but do still have issues that seem to be memory-related. Usually late in the day, after I've been running Revit all day, opening and closing many PDF files, using Photoshop, etc, it seems that I have memory problems such that I can't even open a PDF. I've also had many problems trying to create screen shots (which I use to make vicinity maps and such).

Well, yesterday I tried booting up WITHOUT the 3 GB switch enabled, and now it seems that PDF's have no problem opening, and I have no problem creating a screen shot and pasting it into Photoshop.

So it seems the 3GB switch is causing memory problems with other programs. I did have 2010 crash on my once today suddenly, I guess because it surpassed the 2 GB barrier (although the journal file didn't indicate that it did). Luckily I had recently saved.

So now at this point I'm torn as to whether I should use the 3GB switch or not. I guess really the only thing that will solve all my problems will be 64-bit OS and 8+ GB RAM.

32 bit systems are on the way out. I doubt if you can even buy one at a typical retailer--
most new machines are 64 bit.

Revit will perform much better with more RAM, esp. when other apps are open.

4 GB really is just not enough RAM, esp. when projects become large--
100-200 MB or larger.

cheers.............
