I have a stair with a retaining wall on one side that slopes down with the steps. I am trying to put a rail on top of the wall and not having any sucess.

Can anybody help me?

cap it with a thin slice of floor - the rail will attach to it.

great! I'll give it a try.

On another note; is it possible to get a wall to attach to the bottom side of a staircase? We often enclose the are under the stairs to make a closet and we also want it to look right in the interiors view.

You'll need to edit the wall sketch, no attaching to stairs yet.

You can still host the railings on the stair and use the balusters offset option to make them slope as the stair but not exactly on top of the stair. Don't forget to do the same to the railings offset.

Regarding attaching a wall to a stair, you can do it with a workaround. Create your stair > Export only the stair (no railings) to CAD > Create an in place floor or roof family > Import the DWG containing the exported stair into it. Then you can attach you walls to the stair (working as a floor or roof). Once it is done, move the fake stair to another workset (or use a filter) and turn it off. I have had cases however (few), that even doing this Revit couldn't attach. If that happens, you may want to simplify the stair before exporting. By simplify, I mean if you original stair has no risers (only treads), you probably need to copy your stair and modify it to be monolithic (with underside of winder stepped or smooth) and export this modified stair. You can get rid of it after exported and Revit may understand it better.

What I do to get the wall to attach to the bottom of the the staircase is just draw a sloping reference line where you want the top of the wall to end. Then use the attach top of wall option and pick the reference line. It works great.

For rails on top of sloping retaining walls I have used ramps...the railing will attach exactly to the ramp slope.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, this works too. I have used this method sometimes, but only if the staircase is straight. If it is not, it doesn't work.

Great, thanks for all the tips. I'll try them and see which works best for my stairs.
