We have recently taken up REVIT and find most of its functions relatively painless and usefull to use. Issues arise though when we try to bring in 2D elevation information, particulary existing context surveys.

We were advised to bring them in by creating a family and placing them in the elevation view, but this prevents us from 'sending to back' i.e. behind the proposed model as any drafting / 2D family sits in front, effectly masking the proposals.

As such we have reverted to directly importing the DWG survey into the elevation view, allowing us to make it background. However, this has thrown up issues with the linked file sometimes moving when reloaded or issues with wipeouts etc which then require drafting lines to be added in REVIT. And as we have to create existing and proposed these amendments have to be duplicated!

In short, has anyone else got a clear cut, simple method for dealing with existing elevations (site context) within REVIT?!

I'm not sure what you're trying to do in an elevation view. Are you trying to create your site topography? That is usually done by importing a 3D DWG with site information (either points or topo lines), and then creating a toposurface by importing the information from those layers containing the topo information.
