I work with an engineering company remotely and need to send drawings back and forth. The drawings we xref are stored locally at each end. Therefore, when I send a drawing to them they need to reload the xref. Is there a way to save the layer settings so that when the xref is re-attached the freeze/thaw options remain the same in each layout?

visretain = 1 locks the xref layer states per layout/sheet

If the file you send them is named the same as the previous (and layer names), tell them to set Visretain=1

If what you mean by re-attach: "They attach the XRef from scratch, not simply reload". Then VISRETAIN will do nothing. In this case look into Layer States / LMAN - you can save the on/off, freeze/thaw, vpfreeze, colour, linetype, etc. of each layer to a state. Then export to a file so they can import & restore after they've attached the XRef.
