Problems Exporting Site Plan with Linked Buildings

I'm having problems expoerting a site plan with multiple buildings linked into it. The linked files export, but many families (most notably stairs and doors) flip around and mirror themselves in strange ways. I've found the only workaround is to bind everything prior to exporting, but the binding process is time-consuming and I was wondering if I was missing something.
