Our office upgraded to AutoCAD 2008 a few months ago from CAD 2004. Everyone is now using 2008, but we still have 2004 installed. Normally when you open CAD and close it, the next time you open a dwg from explorer it should open in the version you opened last. This is not happening for this user. Every time he opens a drawing from email or explorer it opens in 2004 even though he only uses 2008. Is there a setting somewhere in windows or CAD that can fix this?

Make sure your DWG files are associated with 2008. I had this problem on one of my users machines. go to the file in Windows Explorer. Right click, and select OPEN WITH. Then browse to your AutoCAD 2008 exe file. Make sure to pick the ALWAYS USE THIS . . . button to associate it.

I recommend opening AutoCAD first, then opening the files. That way you know the proper software and profiles have been loaded.

but note that A2008 and later normally open with the "AutoCAD DWG Launcher" rather than the exe file itself.

yes they do, but when I associated it to the acad.exe file in the 2008 folder, it worked. It still opened with the launcher, but it was opening it properly after that.

Yes, I agree it works; I was just pointing out the "standard" configuration.

Thanks for the help guys. After a little discussion we decided to remove CAD 2004 from the users machine.
