Creating "Existing" families

I need to manipulate current families in order to create "existing families." We show existing content as dashed. I have gone in to the family and edited the line types to show as dashed but when it is brought into a project it comes in as solid. How do I fix this?

you should be using Phasing in Revit to show objects as Existing. There is no need to make changes to the Family. Look into the Help menu, and search for Phasing.
