How long is the line segment you are attempting to draw?
What are you trying to accomplish with the line?
It can be frustrating when you get this message from Revit but Revit has been described as a tool for modeling 'built' things not 'manufactured' things. When you get to a level of detail that Revit can't handle (about 1/32" or slightly less than a millimeter) Revit designers figured, for most purposes, detail at this tolerance level would not be required to document the 'building'.

Thanks for your prompt reply Dimitri
I'm trying to trace a logo - I suppose I'm forced to use a jpg image instead. The segment was less than a millimeter.

There is a work-around method explained on a blog (http://revitfix.blogspot.com/2008/07/tips-with-symbols-generic-annotations.html) from your neck of the woods that might suit you. :)
